On August 6th, 2011 a U.S. Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down in the Wardak province of Afghanistan, causing the largest single day loss in Special Operations history. 31 American lives were lost: 25 U.S. Special Operations Personnel, 5 U.S. Army National Guard and Army Reserve crewmen, and 1 U.S. Military Working Dog. Also, lost that night were 7 Afghan Commandos and 1 Afghan Interpreter.
32 children lost a father and were entered into Special Operations Warrior Foundation's programs. Since that day SOWF has promised to be with them through their educational journey. 9 years later, some of those "children" are now college graduates, others are in college now, and many still have a ways to go through their education. SOWF is honored to be by their side every step of the way.
Today we honor the Fathers, Husbands, Sons, Brothers and Friends that were lost on that day 9 years ago.
