Telling the Story of the Memphis Belle's Triumph in WWII

Veteran's Day is next Monday, and Wednesday night, dozens gathered for a special screening of "Memphis Belle in Color" at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

The film tells the story of the famed Memphis Belle, a B-17 bomber that became a symbol of the Allies fight against the Germans during World War II.

"How did you get back in that airplane after you came back from a rough mission and know you had to go it again? And I said, 'I don't actually know,'" said John "Lucky" Luckadoo, a B-17 pilot of the 100th Bomb Group. "But we stayed focused, we were following orders, and doing what we thought was our patriotic duty."

"Memphis Belle played a critical role in World War II. They took down enemy fire and they saved thousands of lives," said Democratic Brooklyn Councilman Chaim Deutsch, the chair of the City Council Committee on Veterans.

"Memphis Belle in Color" premieres on The Smithsonian Channel on Sunday, November 10, at 9 p.m.
