ViacomCBS Veterans Network recently hosted a Veteran’s Benefits Seminar. It was a free, remote, and open-to-all event with the goal of learning all about Veteran Benefits. The enthusiastic presenters were New York State Division of Veterans' Services' (NYS-DVS) Gari Harvey, Veterans' Benefits Advisor 2, & Benjamin Pomerance, Dep. Director for Program Development. Both men were a wealth of knowledge, and shared myth vs. fact on a myriad of topics from healthcare, bad paper discharges, dependent benefits, how to file a good compensation claim, education, and more.
“This presentation was informative and encouraging. Sometimes it can be difficult and daunting when navigating the benefits afforded to veterans,” said attendee Christopher Barrett, a Marine Corps Vet. “Gari and Benjamin made the benefits information digestible and approachable. It was nice to see and hear the passion they have for veterans during the presentation. I feel at ease knowing they are out there helping veterans get the care and benefits that are available to them.”
Ben Pomerance suggested every veteran, even those who already had successful compensation claims, reach out to call the New York State Division of Veterans’ Services Help Line at 1.888.838.7697 (VETSNYS), to schedule an initial phone appointment with one of their Veterans Benefits Advisors. The advisors, Ben said, would be happy to review each veterans’ individual circumstances, to see if there is anything they can do to be of service.
The NYS-DVS appointments are free of charge. General comments and inquiries can also be sent to DVSInfo@veterans.ny.gov for those who aren't comfortable calling.
The webinar was opened and closed by VetNet Social Media Strategist Melanie Corinne, herself a Marine veteran. “They dispelled a ton of myths,” Melanie said. “I’ve seen so many fellow veterans miss perfectly good opportunities to take care of themselves and their families, all because they didn’t know where to turn to for help. Gari and Ben showcased a great state-vetted resource for our community, and I’m glad they took the time to be with us. It was a privilege to host them.”
For those who weren’t able to attend the event, the presentation will be available on the ViacomCBS YouTube page.
